Born in Toulouse, Alain BECANNE discovered painting and sculpture quite late, as he was forty when he first entered an art studio. The first exhibitions came very quickly, at a time when Alain BECANNE was interested in figuration.

Then, in 2002, came the artistic shock. He discovered lyrical abstraction and artists such as Pierre Soulage, Nicolas de Staël, and Riopelle. These artists would radically influence his painting, both in his aesthetic choices and in his technique. Alain BECANNE's painting is, first and foremost, a reflection on light. Working with oil, the artist manages to play with the brilliance of this material, with the depth of colors, even when it comes to black and white. Like a kaleidoscope, light plays with the touches painted on the canvas, which gives the color a great richness of nuances. This approach to light can be compared to that of Impressionist painters, who associated light with colored touches. However, here we are dealing with abstract work, and light interests the artist only for itself, only for what it brings to the material. Because another important aspect of Alain BECANNE's work is indeed the material. In fact, the artist seems to revel in working with thicknesses, with superimpositions. The paint, applied in broad strokes, comes to life on the canvas, exists for itself. One can then feel the artist's gesture, the movement of the brush, which gives a certain dynamism to the paint strokes.
